ON THE MER DE GLACE
GET INITIATION FOR HIKING ON THE GLACIER WITH YOUR HIGH MOUNTAIN GUIDE
An idea of your day on the Mer de Glace site...
Take the Montenvers train up to the top of the glacier (about 20 minutes). At the end of the journey, you will go down for about 5 minutes to reach the via ferrata which gives access to the moraines of the glacier and then to the Mer de Glace.
Be careful ! Some aerial and vertical ladders that can impress you! The roped descent will be easier (about 40 minutes)
You will go up the glacier for 30 minutes to reach the Mer de Glace canyon (of ice). One kilometer long, at the bottom of which flows the river that dug it. It offers many places to train with crampons and ice axes.
It is possible to learn how to use ice axes on steep slopes of about 20 meters.
Some years, a mill forms. The Bédière, a sub-glacial river, cascades into a crevasse and creates a spectacular vertical chasm. Not to be missed!
Return by the same way, about 1h30.
